You should be below 10mph before attempting 1st gear. Don't chunk the gears. You should be able to lightly toe it into neutral from second if the situation warrants it then&nbsp\\;get&nbsp\\;it into first.

Sportsters are noisy regardless, but make sure you're being pretty intentional with your shifts...don't baby it.

I had trouble getting into 1st when sitting at a light in neutral, dealer said Sportys have a clunky trans, you got to stomp on it.

Not sure if this helps, but I shift at 25(into 2nd), 35(3rd), 45(4th), 55(5th) if regular riding, and if I'm "racing" around 5+ all of those increments. Same for downshifting. Never seems to rev too high unless I hit about 60 in 3rd.

thanks for all the comments , stop at the dealer sunday the bike doctor gave her a physical and said about the same as a few of you .
that sportsters trany is a bit noisy felt that i was to lite on the down shift to first so the doctor perscribed to be firm on the down shift try that for a week and ride the hell out of her to see if it still is grinding in to first . but he did feel that my bike was ideling to low was at 700 rpm should have been 1000rpm

You could try matching the engine RPM's up to the gear you're selecting.....Sometimes you can blip the throttle to get the engine rpm's to match the speed of the gear you're selecting for a smoother shift.&nbsp\\;\\\\\\;&nbsp\\;\\\\\\;
