RE: Installing new shocks
I did, I went from stock 11.75" to 13.5" Progressive 440 Standards, more length equals more travel which equals better ride and in this case a far better ride. I also put Progressive Springs in the forks using the full lenght spacers and 7w BelRay oil.

RE: Installing new shocks
today i just installed the harley two-up touring low shocks for the xl lows and nightsters and they make a great difference really softened the ride. you will need a torque wrench and yea harley recommends 50ftlbs the torx 50 3/4 wrench and blue loctite 242 or 243. and a jack or motorcycle lift to help take wait off the back tire. install takes about 10 minutes very simple and youll love the feeling of the ride.

"are the 412's really that much of an improvement over stock? \\;\\\\\\; I see the progressive models can get pretty steep (440's are $535!) but the 440's just look cleaner compared to the 412's IMO, but i guess you get what you pay for"

They were for me, though I didn't think so at first. They may \\;have needed to break in. \\; I didn't spend the massive $ for the 440s because it's really not a sportbike and I didn't think I needed that level of adjustment - preload was enough. \\;
