I shift generally around those same points, too. Ignore what the owner's manual says about shifting: HDs recommended shifting speeds sound more car-like. Get that thing up in the powerband.
40mph in 5th sounds scary.

Wouldn't know personally...I ain't got a speedo or a tach....I just wait for the pucker and the **** shiver to run down my leg and knock it up a gear before somethin falls off. [8D]

Yeah that sounds about right... Numbers a bit low...no RPM limiter here. \\;-)

I intentionally hit the rev limiter once. Stock 1200L with winshield and saddlebags, I weigh about 140 lbs...2d gear hit the rev limiter at 65 according to the speedo. I wasn't in the position to take it any further as it was the exit from the toll booths at DFW Int'l Airport.
MINIMUM for me is 20 in 1st, 30 in 2d, \\;35 in 3d, 40 in 4th, and 50 in 5th. That's still too \\;slow, but that's minimum for me. NORMALLY I'm with \\;most \\;everyone else, depending on traffic and whether \\;I'm entering the highway on ramp...20-30 in \\;1st, 30-45 in 2d, 40-60 in 3d, 50-70 in 4th, and \\;I'll get into 5th at 60 or above. After that I'll try to find that elusive mythical "sixth gear"!

I'm new to the 1200N. \\; I find myself on roads that are going about 50-55mph and I thought it was a good idea to be in 5th gear. \\; At this speed I may go for 20 to 30 miles before slowing down or speeding up. \\; Would you stay in 4th gear all this time? \\; Or shift into 5th? \\; Thanks for the input.
