Default Need clarification on Stage 1 upgrades please.

Sorry if this has been asked before but I am fairly new here and obviously not "yet" familiar with all the mods and lingo.
&nbsp\\;
So I want to get more hp from my 883 and quickly took notice to the 1200 conversion kit which includes the cylinders, pistons...&nbsp\\; I also saw a Stage 1 Kit on the HD which had the same thing I just mentioned PLUS the air intake kit.&nbsp\\; After browsing Ebay and
other stores online I also saw a Stage 1 carb jet kit.&nbsp\\; Then I read somewhere about a Stage 5 kit.
&nbsp\\;
I tried calling a local HD shop but got the usual "come on in, sit down and let us work a quote crap..." and I really just need
clarification.
&nbsp\\;
What the heck is a Stage 1?&nbsp\\; Are there other stages?
&nbsp\\;
What do I need for a 1200 conversion besides cylinder/head kit?
&nbsp\\;
Does anyone have info or links where I can read up on this?
&nbsp\\;
How do I know if my bike already has the Stage 1 air intake kit?&nbsp\\; (bought it used a while back and the original owner had lots
of stuff done to it.&nbsp\\; Unfortunately, he is less knowledgeable about bikes than me.)&nbsp\\; All I can tell you is it has a K&amp\\;N filter on it.
&nbsp\\;
Any info will be appreciated, thanks.

Stage 1 is a high flow air cleaner, free flowing exhaust, card rejet/EFI remaping and upgraded ignition module.

Stage 1/2/3:
http://www.sportster.org/tech/basic-...age-list.shtml

To see if you have an A/C kit already you should look inside your Air Filter system if your have these parts from a SE kit:
http://i32.tinypic.com/208z9za.jpg

Basically you should first go with a stage 1 kit:
- Get a A/C Kit\\\\\\;
- Get new exhaust or slip-on mufflers\\\\\\;
- Get a Carb Jet kit #45 and #170 or #180 main jet\\\\\\;

Voila you got yourself a new bike for less then $400 bucks.

10-15% power increase with that simple kit.

I'm currently doing that to my 1st Sportster.

Thanks for the pic to use as a reference.&nbsp\\;\\\\\\; Doesn't look like I have that kit,&nbsp\\;\\\\\\; see pics.&nbsp\\;\\\\\\; From what I am told my pipes are
Bub Jug Huggers.&nbsp\\;\\\\\\; Though I think they look the best, I have no idea whether they add or inhibit the ability to increase performance.&nbsp\\;\\\\\\; Maybe some readers here can provide feedback.

That aircleaner looks to be pretty unrestricted to me, and the pipes should do you good.&nbsp\\; I know there are a couple of guys here with those pipes.&nbsp\\; Just a guess, but with thar AC and those pipes, I would bet that the carb has been done as well.&nbsp\\; You can check the underside of the card to see if the plug over the mixture screw has been removed.&nbsp\\; If it has, it's a good bet that it has been rejetted...or just the mixture set at the minimum.&nbsp\\; The only way I know of to be sure that the carb was rejetted would be to tear it down and look at the jets.

Yes it does look like you already have the Stage 1. There are 2 ways to figure it out:

1st: open your carb to see if you have the Jet Kit\\;
2nd and preferable: see if you can ride a stock sportster 883 and compare it's low-mid range power with yours.

Thanks for the info gang.&nbsp\\; I'll remove&nbsp\\;the carb&nbsp\\;sometime this weekend or next week.&nbsp\\; I haven't ridden any other Harleys so its hard for me to compare.&nbsp\\; I have ridden a Vstar 1100 in addition to my Vstar 650 and must say my Sporty has more kick than the 1100.&nbsp\\; On the 1100 I could be&nbsp\\;cruisin at 50, open throttle it and be able to control it with one hand on the bars.&nbsp\\; With my sporty I can't do that.&nbsp\\; It'll take off...forcing me to reach over with the other hand and grab on.&nbsp\\;
&nbsp\\;
Interesting what one of you mentioned about my pipes.&nbsp\\; Today the service guy at the HD shop said the BJ Huggers were the worst to have as far as performance.&nbsp\\; I am more inclined to listen to someone who isnt going to turn around and try to sell me something.&nbsp\\;

cHarley here on the forum has those pipes on his Sporty.&nbsp\\; He seems to know his s**t when it comes to these bikes.&nbsp\\; If they were such a bad pipe as the dealer was saying, I don't think he would have them.&nbsp\\; You might want to PM jim and ask his opinion of them.
