Depends on how you enter (and leave) Canada.
&nbsp\\;
If my land or water as of Dec 21, 2007, passport requirements have been once again delayed meaning that US citizens arriving in Canada by land or water do not need a passport until at least summer 2009.
&nbsp\\;
Different story if you are flying as you will need a passport to get back into the U.S.

No passport is required of US citizens to enter Canada by air, land or sea.&nbsp\\; Drivers liscense is fine.
&nbsp\\;
Coming back to the US is not as simple (imagine that)
by air - passport required
by land/sea - Drivers liscence and original birth certificate ok thru this year

I'd take the passports&nbsp\\;regardless.&nbsp\\; I know I got mine stamped flying into Montreal last year and it'll make sure they know your genuine&nbsp\\;- if nothing else it may save time while the mounties decide what to do with the crazy bikers...

Best thing is to just go ahead an get a Passport (if you don't already have one)...
&nbsp\\;
Guess if you don't do much traveling out of the country they weren't really needed in the past, but the way things are going you will probably need one to travel from state to state in the near future..&nbsp\\; [8D]
&nbsp\\;
I've had a valid Passport all my adult life, but I do make frequent trips out of the country.
