HAving Carb trouble, HELP!!!!
I just replaced my stock mufflers with drag pipes and put in some back pressure with the baffles from the old pipes. I put in a 175 main and a 45 slow and I opened up the back box (stock) with 2 quater moon shapes cut out of it and that big *** blade looking thing was cut down to the edge of the filter so it can breath. I am still getting bogging and sputtering what do you suggest that I do? Should I take the filter out completly or should I just mess with the mixture screw? Please any suggestions with this would be appreciated! \\;

Maybe a larger main jet? \\; Mine's got a 180 main and no sputtering or bogging down. \\; Could just be the mixture needs fine tunning as well. \\; I would not run without the filter unless you want to suck every bit of airborne dirt into your engine.

Whats your bike? 1200 or 883? Did you follow these instructions from sportster.org: '3) The only thing that matters here is getting the jets correct. A #45 slow jet, and a #170 main jet for 883s, or #180 main jet for 1200s, or #200 main jet for '98 1200 Sports'.

RE: HAving Carb trouble, HELP!!!!
Did you bother changing your air filter......put in a K&\\;N replacement if not,  \\; if your still using a stock paper filter you won't see much difference with the extra breather holes cut.  \\; \\; Did you try running the pipes without the baffles.....maybe you restricted them too much, and could try trilling extra holes in the baffles your using.  \\; \\; As for the carb, did you clean it when you did the jets............if not take it completely apart, get all rubber peices off of it, and soak it in some strong carb cleaner, \\; followed by a rinse down of aerosole carb spray, being sure to spraying through every passage way, then flash dry with compressed air. \\; Durring reassembly, check the float level to make sure it's correct, if it's too low or too high, the bike will run for crap. \\; I can do a complete carb cleaning from start to finish in about 2hours and have it back on the bike, \\; although if the carbs never been cleaned before you may wanna let it soak over night in the carb cleaner.  \\; I feel it's a better route to insure everythings clean first, otherwise you can mess around with jets and whatnot for days and still not get it right simply because there's some varnish buildup in the carb.

RE: HAving Carb trouble, HELP!!!!
thanks for the load of info all! I will go and try out the new filter first then if not I will take out the baffles then clean out the carb the least amount of work first is the way I see it. But I did take the carb and sqirt it down with a fine wire brush and cleaned the surface areas but not as drum412 did. Thanks again this is good info.
