Anticipation.......

Anticipation.......
I was a little over a mile from my home. \\; There were about six cars eastbound on a county road, I was westbound. \\; I saw the first car, a silver grand am, with it's turn signal on, coming towards me. \\; He was going to turn in the Avalon Inn and Resort, which has three large drives to turn into and the blind couldn't miss it. \\; I had this feeling and sure enough, he turned left in front of me. \\; I had just come off my road and was going 40 mph. \\; Locked up the breaks, skidded and felt the rear end start to break loose. \\; Released for a second and re applied the brakes. Well I got stopped in time. \\; 43 feet on the first skid mark, 17 foot gap when I released and hit the brakes again, followed by another 20 skidmark. \\; I just had the feeling he was going to turn in front of me. \\; Had I been looking off somewhere else, I probably would not have stopped in time. \\; Whew!!

RE: Anticipation.......
wow thats scary. its the worst thing when you just know its coming...
but in reflection, its also the best thing becuase it saved you.
if someone looks like there going to turn i slow a bit and flash the high beams quick, this way i have enough time to stop in case they turn even though i signalled. \\; i do this now after being in your situation a few times

RE: Anticipation.......
Glad ya got stopped in time! I practice "panic" stops regularly for just such an occasion. Developing the habit of using the front brake all the time so that's what I'll automatically go for in an emergency. As you found out, panic stops using more rear brake don't work out so well. [\\] At 40 MPH, you should get stopped in ~59 feet
= 80 feet
Practice panic stops everyone! And the front brake is your best friend!

RE: Anticipation.......
The front brake does provide more brake power but you shouldn't use it as your only braking source. If a front tire locks up it's not much better for you. With a rear lock you at least have the chance to slide to a stop if you're still going pretty straight, a front tire lock up could have you on the ground just as fast as a rear one.

RE: Anticipation.......
I locked them both up, released for a split second (17 feet) then got on them again. \\; I'm from Ohio and the car \\;was from New York. \\; The oncoming traffic stopped when they heard my tires squealing. \\; They all sat there and looked at this guy as I followed him in circles around the parking lot. \\; I pulled up behind the drivers door and let loose with the horn. \\; Scared him schidless.
