the stock shocks are fine for now. Set up the preload some and you'll be ok.
How do you adjust the stock shocks? I ride solo, but on some roads they bottom out on me and my spine cringes.

You can buy a "spanner wrench" at the dealer for about 12 bucks, probably cheaper anywhere else. But anyway, with your spanner wrench it's super easy to raise or lower your shocks. When I take my wife I set the shocks to their highest, or stiffest setting. When I go back solo I lower them full down.
You can ride two up with the stock shocks OK but the the Progressives will keep you from bottoming out as often and give a little extra cushion to your ride.

Do you mean a British "spanner" aka the U.S. "monkey wrench" aka adjustable wrench? Or something more specialized?

And what gets tightened/loosened, exactly? I am new to tinkering.

Thanks.

The spanner wrench looks like a claw and adjusts the preload of the spring at the bottom.

Ah, thanks. I just googled it, seems like there are several types. Some are hook shaped and some are hinged like scissors.

What's the procedure for increasing the preload?

Dude why? I ride 2 up all the time on my 883. We live in the mountains and travel twistys all the time?We have been all day riding no real issues as far as power.

We ride two-up all the time with a preload number 4 out of five with no problems.&nbsp\\;The railroad tracks are the only thing we worry about. The 412's are the way to go, but if you don't want to spend the money like me the stock will work.
