96 883/1200 with 883 ign module?
I just noticed something...just bought this bike a couple months ago..
Its been converted to a 1200, but it's still controlled by a stock 883 ignition module! it says 883 right on the side of it. Will this adversely affect everything? id imagine it would....different motor parts...
If it would, and either way...anyone know where i can get a screamin eagle module? seem kinda hard to come by!
thanks!

If it was just the cylinders only that were changed, the 883 module will work just fine for the most part. Once headwork and cams are also changed, then a new module will be more beneficial. Simply put, if you tune everything properly and the bike is still pinging, that's a sign that you'll need a new module. I run a dyna 2000i nosecone module on mine, nice part is that the entire module is under the timing cover so you don't have a seperate module box to mount anywhere. Another popular module is made by Crane. I don't know if your looking for a used SE module, but new ones can be purchased at any harley dealership, as a matter of fact a buddy of mine just got one for his 95' last week, so I know their readily available.

The ignition module also controls the speedo. A 1200 module on a converted 883 would cause the speedo to read wrong unless the gearing on the bike was changed. There is little if any difference between the 883 & 1200 engine timing in the stock ICM.

RE: 96 883/1200 with 883 ign module?
Cool, thanks very much for the info!
It's funny..I was at the dealer picking up a set of cylinder studs for when i put gaskets on it last week, and asked the parts counter guy if they had a SE ignition module, and he said nope, and also said that they're really hard to come by. Guess he was just too busy, lol. Maybe I'll stick to the module i've got for now, as I dont think it's got an aftermarket cam in it...and i dont really plan to hit the rev limiter any time soon, lol. Hmm...about the gearing... Would it be benefical to me to switch my 883 27 tooth front sprocket to the 1200 29 tooth one? The ol sporty is revving kinda high on the highway, just feels like im pushing it...although it does have plenty more giddyup even at 75+.. Maybe it's just me, since this is my first harley, and I'm coming from an older CBR with a 12000 rpm limiter Anyway... I dont really like to hammer on it a whole whole lot, but would a 29 tooth sprocket up front extremely hinder my bottom end?
Thanks!

Ntrent - if you change your mind on wanting a 1200 ignition module let me know - I have a new SE ignition module for a 1200. I'll be only to glad to sell it to you for $80 shipped (ordered it by mistake, wanted one for an 883, and electronics aren't returnable).

The 883 module works just fine even with head work, I put a Zippers Torqster kit in my wifes bike and they don't change the module with that kit and it's been in use for 7 years with no problems.
If you really think you have to change it, don't waste your money on a factory module especially a SE module, get and after market adjustable system of some sort.
