Default A good indication of the Gas crunch.

My Girlfriend is a Credit Union Manager. She says they are doing more loans everyday for motorcycles than anything else. Someday, everyone will ride!

That may not be all good, because a lot of people who ride have never taken an MSF course. I almost got hit by some moron on a big scooter the other day. Traffic was just starting to move at a green light, I'm about 5 cars back, left of center in my lane just letting out the clutch, and he blows by me on the left splitting lanes at about 30 MPH. Didn't hear him coming, (those things are quiet!), and he was literally about 4-6 inches from my handlebars. [:@] Scared the crap outta me. Now, don't get me wrong, I'll split lanes at a light to move slowly to the front if there's room, but this guy was just being stupid. There are a lot more like him on the road these days. On scooters, sport bikes, and cruisers. They give all of us a bad name, not to mention putting their own and others lives in danger. You know, like the guys in tank tops, shorts and sneakers with their girl on the back in a bathing suit. Stupid...

I was watching CNN a few days ago, and they were talking about the number of people that were purchasing scooters for use on their daily commute to work.

They said that scooter sales have increased over 40%.

I don't know much about 'scooters', but they are becoming a very popular means of commuting for many people. Many of the newer scooters are full size and very user friendly (automatic transmissions, etc.), get great gas mileage, and can easily travel at normal highway speeds.

But it really doesn't surprise me at all. Many people are looking for something that is inexpensive, light weight, gets 80+ MPG, cheaper to insure, and easy to operate and maintain.

For that segment of the population a lower cost scooter (or even a lightweight metric bike) would make much more sense than spending up to $20,000 for a heavy Harley that isn't nearly as easy to ride or maintain, and only gets half the fuel economy.

I don't know, but the performance of some of these 'scooters' is nothing to sneeze at.

The Piaggio X9 is only 460cc, and is only what would be considered a 'mid performance' model compared to some of the newer high performance scooters which have engines ranging up to 800cc.

Even so, the Piaggio X9 is very quick, fuel injected, and has a top speed of 110 MPH. I believe you can find new models for around $5,200.

I refinaced my truck at a credit union to get my bike and I use it for a daily riding to work. Put about 80 miles on it a day. Costs 1/2 asmuch to get to work vs my truck.
