Default 1000 mile service

So I called the dealer and asked them when they could get it in about 2 wks ago and they told me it would be about a month. How crazy is that sh*t. Well I decided to take the bike to my dads in Mo so he could see it and at the time the father in law was in town and he wanted to see it too so I rode it to show him it, in the process went over the 1000 by about 80 miles, so I called the dlr and asked if they could get it in any earlier and they said I could bring it in and drop it off but it would be about a week before they could get to it. I proceeded to call the custom chopper builder in town and Lori Combs(one owner of shop) sent me an email with all the service they would do for a 1000 mile checkup which was just as extensive as the harley dealer and was about 50 bones cheaper and the bonus to it all was she said bring it in today and you will ride off tomorrow. So I took the bike in at around noon on wed and got a phone call at 4:30 saying Chris come get your bike it is done. Thank god for custom builders they are life savers I will never take my bike to harley to get it serviced. Lori and Ric were absolutely the best. So if anyone from the eastern kansas area need work done on there bike take it to Combs Customs in Lawrence great people.

Sounds good. Get yourself a service manual and save even more money and time.

Good story! Dealers are notorious for being short-handed as the riding season approaches. Don't they get it??? []

.........the only reason I used the dealership for 1k was it was a freebie for buying a new HD from them.....
.but the indies round here do it for around $125............I wouldn't think the top mechanics at the dealership are doing the 1k service.......

.but keep in mind, there are some real shitty indies out there as well..........got a few around here............B

These guys have to be HD certified or whatever as well to keep warranty also, or am I wrong?

Nope. Just make sure you get a checklist from the people that do your service. If you do it yourself, keep reciepts for parts, and keep records of what your do. There is always the outside chance that if something gets hosed by you or your idni., they may try to give you some greif about it.

Personaly, I let the dealership do the 1000. But I trust the one I go to.

Nope! Otherwise, doing it yourself would void the warranty. And it doesn't. Just keep receipts for work done. I mean, most of the early maintenance is simple stuff. It doesn't take a NASA engineer to figure it out.

I had my local indie do my 1000 mile service and every other bit of work i've ever had done to my bike.

honestly, i'd rather go to the indie, as there is going to be one of two people working on my bike there. both of them are very experienced and both used to be the service managers at the dealership I bought my bike from. They are certified harley mechanics and custom builders as well. Their work is impeccable.

Now, if I took my bike to have the service done at the dealership, how do i know that a new 18year old tech is not practicing his new skills on my bike?
