Default 1998 1200C questions

Ive been hanging on the Dyna side of the forum, but please dont hold that against me. An older guy in town has been trying to sell me his 1998 1200c Sportster. His son bought it under the HD/Military plan while he was stationed in Germany. The son had it shipped back and has not ridden it since. Its been started, serviced, just not ridden. Now get this... it only has 1,440 miles on it original. Ive ridden it.. and its a blast. My only problem with it from the start was, he wanted too much money for it. He was asking $7,200 and I told his it was too much. I even helped him after I bought my Dyna, trying to sellit for him. No takers. So out of the blue he calls me last nite and says, if you still like the bike, stop over after work today and lets talk one more time. I believe he is tired of paying taxes, etc and just wants it gone. The bike has 2 plugs per cylinder, dual disk brakes up front, but is stock. So I need to hear from you guys.. THE Sportster experts... opinions on this particular year/make/model. I would love to add it to my stable.

Well first off, it'snot a 1200C....it'sSport.....Dual plug heads and dualfront breaks tells you it's a sport, or he did some mad mod'in for just riding it those1440 miles. Yes, $7200 is way too much. KBB list the sport value at $5400, and the custom at $5700. NADA lists the sport at $3270 and the custom $3700. Talk to him and see how far down he'll go.

Mine is the 95th Anniversary edition (1200XL) and have no complaints at all. Absolute blast to ride and it always turns heads (think having it chromed out to the max helps with that).

Someday I may upgrade butthe sportywill always stay in the family...too much work done on it to let it go.

Good luck!

It's a 98, does it have the anniversary badging/paint scheme? Not that that makes much of a difference in price, but I would be apt to pay a little more for a pristine ann bike than for a standard bike. Just my 2 cents. Get it as cheap as you can.

I am a big fan of the 1200S ... We have a '99 1200S in the garage, and it is simply a fun and fantastic bike. You will not be disappointed!

I rode it tonite... first Sporty Ive ridden since I got the Dyna almost 3 years ago. It didnt feel like it had the same pep I felt on it 3 years ago when I first rode it. Could just need the gas changed out... and ridden some. Ive found some very light surface rust on the forwards on both sides, springs on the shocks, and a few bolt heads show signs of rust. But it starts right up.. snaps to attention. That rust may well rub out with some Never Dull I hope. Anyway I told him I would call him Thursday and we could talk some more. His words were "I still hope to get $7000 out of this if I can...". Im going to offer closer to $6000 and see what happens. Thanks for the replies and the pics.

I can't see paying 6k for a 98 even if it has 1500 miles on it in perfect shape.[sm=smiley21.gif][sm=smiley21.gif][sm=smiley21.gif] I got an old man down the street from me selling a 98 1200 which shows signs of being dropped and its been sitting in a garage for about 5 years not taken care of. He still wants 3500 for it and I think he's smoking crack!! If book on that bike is 5400 like wvhogrider says I'd at least try 5k.
