I did not use any mounts, I also have a different set of bags now, no mount with them either, just threw them over the back and tied them down, no problems yet.
Personally, I think large bags look terrible on the Nightster. I use small sissy bar bags on mine. they fit perfect right in front of each shock. They attach with nylon cat collars which work great.

Reason: add picture
Did you have to get the H-D saddle bag mounts for those? I have an 09 Nightster and i want to get saddle bags, but i do not want to spend an unnecessary amount at H-D just to buy some mounts...if I don't need them.
I bought the HD mounts. They do not fit the Nightster properly and I removed them.
I have a set of HD leather throwover saddlebags that I bought for my Nightster because the HD website and the catalog said they fit. They do not. They are too large. They sit in the garage unused.
I bought a set of Willie & Max throwovers (compact slanted) that fit perfectly.
Not real good pics, but mine is an actual saddle bag for a horse cut in half and mounted on one side. I ride everyday to and from work and I got REAL tired of wearing a backpack all the time.
I know my bike isn't a Nightster, but throw overs with the harness shortened up and used under the seat works very well and they are very easy to take on and off.
Personally I think saddlebags on any Sportster looks like a saddle on a sow but sometimes you just have to use them.
I'm having a hard time finding bags that will work for my Nightster too. I want something for every day riding that will hold a jacket, wallet etc., but also something that will hold enough stuff for 2 or 3 days on the road. Bump to get more ideas/suggestions....
