Warm-up - Enrichenment

Warm-up - Enrichenment
I've seen a lot of posts about warming up their ride before leaving their neighborhood, and being concerned about noise-sensitive nighbors. Now, I'm not an expert, but a five-minute warm-up seems unnecessary, and HD recommends against it (sort of). Here's what they say about it and you decide:
PS: This ought to start a hell of an argument.
OPERATION
NOTES
The following starting and operating instructions for all Harley-Davidson motorcycles are recommendations. They may be modified for individual vehicles.
The vehicle should be allowed to warm up for only 15-30 seconds before being driven. Initial warm-up periods longer than 30 seconds are not recommended.
Cool Engine
Outside Temperature less than 60 degrees F (16 C)
BE SURE THROTTLE IS CLOSED. Pull enricher **** fully-out. Turn the ignition switch on and press starter switch to operate the electric starter.
Note: For temperatures below 20 degrees F (-6.7C), you may need to pump the throttle once or twice immediately before attempting engine start-up. This will add extra fuel from the carburetor accelerator pump to assist the start-up.
1. After initial 15-30 second warm-up, ride for 3 minutes or 2 miles (3.2 km), with the enrichener **** in full-out position.
2. After 3 minutes or 2 miles (3.2 km), push the enrichener **** in to the 1/2 way position. Ride 2 minutes or 2 miles (3.2 km).
3. After 2 minutes or 2 miles (3.2 km), push the enrichener **** fully in to the normal running position.
Note: If engine will not idle at specified rpm, pull out enrichener **** enough to allow correct idle speed. Ride another 2 minutes or 2 miles (3 km); then push enrichener **** fully in.
Outside Temperature Greater than 20 degrees F (16 C)
BE SURE THROTTLE IS CLOSED. Pull enrichener **** fully out. Turn the ignition switch on and press starter switch to operate the electric starter.
1. After initial 15-30 second warm-up, ride for 1 minute or 0.5 mile (0.8 km) with the enrichener **** in fll-out position.
2. After 1 minute or 0.5 mile (0.8 km), push the enrichener **** in to the 1/2 way position. Ride 1 minute or 0.5 mile (0.8 km).
3. After 1 minute or 0.5 mile (0.8 km), push the enrichener **** fully in to the normal running position.
Note: If engine will not idle at specified rpm, pull out enrichener **** out enough to allow correct idle speed. Ride another 2 minutes or 2 miles (3 km); then push enrichener **** fully in.
Warm or Hot Engine
Open throttle 1/8-1/4 of full travel. Turn on ingition switch and operate electric starter. DO NOT USE ENRICHENER unless engine will not idle at specifed rpm. If engine will not idle at specified rpm, pull out enrichener **** enough to allow correct idle speed. Ride 2 minutes
or 2 miles (3 km); then push enrichener **** fully in.
Note: If the engine does not start after a few turns or if one cylinder fires weakly but engine does not start, it is usually because of an over-rich (flooded) condition. This is especially true of a hot engine. If the engine is flooded, push the enrichener **** in all the way, turn the ignition on and operate starter with throttle wide open. DO NOT "pump" the throttle while turning the engine over.

RE: Warm-up - Enrichenment
crank it with choke on for about 30 seconds and put it in gear, if it stumbles leave choke in. If it doesn't then back off to half work my way down the street then if the RPM's are high push it all the way in. Works for me.
don't really get on it (the throttle, that is) for a few minutes if it's cold outside, as soon as it's warmed up, i'm zooming thru traffic!

RE: Warm-up - Enrichenment
IAs cold as it has been I use full enricher(choke) and gradually decrease it with in the first 30 seconds or so until I get a good idle. I try to respect my neighbors at 5 in the morning when I roll out of the shed and head in for work. All you are looking for is smooth engine operation so don't need to flood the thing with fuel unnecessairly.

Triumph, Honda, it's a choke. But the **** on the Sportster that says "CHOKE" isn't. Owning a Sporters "enriches" all of us, except for my bank account... it "choked".

RE: Warm-up - Enrichenment
Hollywood Squares answer: Funny they call it enRICHment when all this bike does is drain my bank account. CHOKE is a more apt description - It chokes the $ out of me.
Real answer: Seems like its more of a courtesy/loud bike issue. If you have quiet pipes you can let it warm up with the choke/enricher in your driveway. Else, get it to go ASAP without stumbling and push **** in gradually as you exit the neighborhood. I do the latter because my CS pipes are a little loud ~ especially at 0600.
