Default OIL TEMP HOT OR NOT?

Hey Guys/Gals I rode in on my 883 yesterday into Ventura from San Diego and noticed my oil temp hit @200 is this normal? I thought it was a bit hot...Then again I was riding @80mph it is a relitively new bike. Itonly has 8000 on it and I paid 3g's So this is my first HD hence the question. Any thoughts?

So what would be too hot? My bike would read 220F at the same speed. Depends on guage accuracy, how hot the day, bike set up etc?

Yeah, it will fluctuate withthe changes listed above and more. As for the "So what would be too hot?".....Well, that would depend on what type of oil you're using. Some oils have higher/lower breakdown points. Some of the "Oil Guru's" here should be able to give you a lecture (or the specs) on the oil you're using. Or just use the search function or jump over to the oil/lube section & do some reading. Mine ran right around 215 or 220 with dino oil, and running around 200 since switching over to 20-50 synthetic.

I run at least 10-15 degrees cooler with Mobil V-Twin 20-50 synthetic.

The only time I ran over 200* on my 883 with dino was when the temps were 90+

On dino oil, I used to hit 260 on a farily regular basis. Of course that was in the summer with air temps of 90 or above. Switched to Mobil-1 v-twin. I rode last summer in 115, oil temp never got above 220. Usually below 200.

I've seen 210 running through Bakersfield in July. But also remember that water won't evaporate until 212. So, I'm thinking I'm just getting rid of some water in the oil. ;-)
