Default '07 custom tach question...Sensor wire connection?

Hello Gents,

I got my HD tach and bracket installed, but trying to determine where to connect the sensor wire.......On some sporty's you connect at coil, on others you connect to speedometer.......

If you have an '07 custom and installed a tach, where did you connect the trigger wire?

Thanks!

Hmmm, if you have the correct HD tach. it should have 5 wires.

Pin 1 - Orange - Ignition
Pin 2 - light green/violet - databus
pin 5 - brown/drey - battery
pin 6 - orange/white - accessory
pin 7 - black - ground

The tach is driven from a digital signal via the databus.
A connector harness should couple the tach to the speedo.

Nope, 3 wires.......It's supposed to be correct tach for the application

...HD part # 69829-06

Orange/white = hot
Black = ground
pink = trigger

Hmmmmmmmm

Well, it appears you are correct. That p/n is listed as fitting Sporties, 07 & up XL Customs only. There is a different p/n for Sporties 04-06 all models. Unfortunately, I don't have the wiring diagrams for 07 & up. I really doubt the sensor wire ties into the coil, it should tie into the speedo databus line but I don't know for certain.

Thanks Gents,

JRK5892, your link revealed one really great point. I can power and ground the tach directly off the speedo......If I get really lucky, there may be a trigger signal pin in there too.......That would make for a painless install because I wouldn't have to remove the tank and the wires would only be 8-10" long and I could conceal them in the riser.

Thanks again!

Hi, On my 08 1200C, pink wire goes in pin opening #3 on the back of speedo, orange/white goes in fuse holder bottom left marked ign, you have to install a terminal on wire and plug it in the back, (nasty job), ground(black) goes on stud right by starter.Mine works great. Hope this helps

Here is pic installed but not yet wired....I wanted it mostly for the super bright shift light...the shift light is programable and will help keep me out of the rev limiter

THANKS 1200efi!.....pin #3 on speedo, huh? Ok, cool!....I'll probe around in there and see if I can also pick up 12+ and good ground....The tach only pulls a little current, so maybe the speedo can support it.

I did it on my 03 sporty without removing the tank. I had to take the speedometer out of the housing but it was alot less time than removing the tank. My sending wire was the pink one. replace the wire in the deutch connector and your golden. Do a search for tach in the stickies above. There is a good step by step up there.
