Default Timing question

I put the Screamin Eagle ignition module in.It let's the rpm's go up to 7500.I haven't hit that yet but I might.Anyway.after installing it I tried to do the timing.I folllowed the instructions in my manual. For those of you that have done the timing,I couldn't get the little red light to come on the module.I moved it around as much as you can but it never lit up.So I just put it in the same position as the stock module was in. But it seems to be running rough untill it's warmed up.I'm actually getting carb farts again.Haven't had any since the stage 1 was done.I checked the plugs and they seemed fine.Color wise that it is.(other then the fact the front plug was no where near gapped correctlly. How exactlly does a plug get so far off in the gapping? I mean I check the plugs a lot and make sure the gap is correct, but this time it was way to closed).Anyway,is there a trick to getting the timing correct,or should I have it dyno'd? thanks for the help

Out of curiosity, what is the p/n of your SE ignition module? The only SE module listed in my 2008 catalog for a 1998-2003 883 is p/n 32979-98A. It has a rev limit of 6800 rpm and the ignition timing is non adjustable.

I also hope you know that your stock valve train will not withstand 7500 rpm's without catastrophic damage.

I bought it on ebay. This is what it said

#32971-98 SCREAMING EAGLE IGNITION MODULE, 7.5K, XL883, FITS 98- LATTER XL 883 MODELS. 7500 RPM LIMIT THIS RETAILS AT $120.00

It was brand new in the package. If you google the part number it will come up.It isn't on the Harley Website anymore though.I paid $50 for it and $10 shipping.

Sorry Booey, I looked to see it I could come up with any more technical data on that module but I came up empty handed.

I do want to point out the description for this unit:
"These modules increase peak horsepower and allow performance bikes to turn higher RPMs: E.O. pending on '01 XL models. For race application only."

In this case, "performance bikes", is implying that your are installing this module on a motor with high performance head work and cams. Without that work, running a stock motor over 6800-7000 rpm's will likely result in a very expensive repair job.

You've been warned.....

I really don't want to put the stock module back in.It is a pain in the *** running the wiring harness through the motor, and also I had to remove the plug and put the new wires in the old plug.It took forever.
