oil cooler installation question

RE: oil cooler installation question
My 1200R is new (picked up last Wednesday), stock, and now has 500 miles on her.
Temperatures here in Texas have been pretty warm this last week, upper 90's some days.
I have ordered a thermometer dip stick but it has not arrived yet so I have been relying on a digital baster thermometer to take oil temperatures immediately after shut down, real temperatures may be a bit higher during running, I will know more later.
Before the oil cooler (installed at 180 miles) the temperature was reading around 220...since the oil cooler was insatalled, the highest temp I have seen so far is 190 with as low as 175 (after a 50 mile ride).... I am also dealing with a new engine which may be reading high due to break in so temps may settle down later.
It does not have an thermostat so in the winter if temp is a problem, I can cover it up. IMO a non thermostat keeps its simple and less to go wrong.
I will know more about the oil operating temps this week when my thermometer/dip stick arrives...and weather here heats up.

RE: oil cooler installation question
re: oil cooler installation question - I would assume that you would need to drain the oil first? I don't have a lift/jack/hoist. Is one needed to install the oil cooler? I was trying to find Harley installation instructions online, but was unable to. Isometimes find that the instructions are wrong, or in some cases the part does not even fit - after owning Harley's since 1982.

RE: oil cooler installation question
The engine coolers are notorious for leaking. Just more rubber lines to contend with. I understand your concern about hot outside ambient temperatures. If you run synthetic oil, its gonna help keep your motor oil about 20 degrees cooler. Another option is instead of adding an oil cooler you might look into an engine cooling fan that can be turned off and on by a switch. Moving air over thecooling fins of your v-twin will dissipate heat even when your stopped in traffic

RE: oil cooler installation question
If the oil cooler is installed correctly, I do not see why a leak should be 'notorious' but I agree that with two additional hose connections, the risks are there.
The place I always thought would be prone to a link is the short section of rubber hose with a plug and worm clamp that is used to drain the oil when other brands have a drain bolt and washer...but so far so good.
