RE: 1000 Sportester
A lot of folks used to put fatbob style tanks on their Sportsters back then. The Sportys original peanut tank was under 3 gallons, if I remember right (used on the 900cc and early 1000cc Sportsters). So aftermarket tanks were very popular. After H-D increased the size of the peanut, and then came out with the new 4+ gallon tank we see now, the use of the larger tanks kind of faded away some. If I remember, they only had two designations then. XLH, and XLCH.

The 61CI Ironhead (also called 1,000CC) engine came out in 1972, and was used until the Sportster EVO was introduced in 1986.
Largest 'stock' tank I'm aware of is the 4.0 gallon tank used on the 1977 XLCR.
The '77 XLCR was designedby ***** G to be a "Cafe Racer", and about 1,900 were produced in 1977, 1,200 in 1978, and only a handfull in 1979.
Here is a couple pictures of the '77 1000CC XLCR that I 'borrowed' from the internet.
