A friend and I were out on a ride yesterday and we were following this other group of Harleys. I thought they were going to the same place we were. They missed the turnoff and we followed. And couldn't find the way back to the road we were supposed to be on. 35 miles later we pull into a gas station and my friend says, "I got a map!!!" So I go over to look at the map, and it was one of those GPS units. Of course we were there for 10 minutes trying to get the damn thing to get a signal. I asked a guy who was getting gas where this road was, and he told me. I told my friend to put the gadget away and ride.

Yea a lot of people don’t realize how bad GPS can be. From getting lock, the quality of the satellite signal, to receiving and acceptingbounced signals from glass and other reflective surfaces can be major problems.

I use my iPhone which you can triangulate your location from cell phone towers. I can also Google map my location if I know an address nearby. I need a compass and I'll be set. Although, I did a good job finding my bearings by knowing the sun's location.
A little offtopic, I went for a nice 70 mile ride on Sunday. I checked out all the rural/backroads I never rode on. With my iPhone in my pocket, I knew I could just pull over and find my location (hopefully have service!). So I just turned only on roads I didn't know. It was really fun to just get "lost".

I have the TomTom rider. Haven't had it too long, maybe a month, but it has worked great so far.
I visit a lot of clients for work and although the directions are great, even better is it telling me when I'm going to get there.
It's great to not worry about being late.

Bad experience here. Mine, a Garmin nuvi 260W, routes me on roads that are closed, tells me there are gas stations where there are none, and gives me routes that are more complex than ploting my own on an old fashioned paper map. Me, I'll take u$oft Streets and Trips to plan my rides. $400 down the drain.[:@]

I don't have a hand held mine is factory indash and I never once in 1 1/2 years ever lost signal even in tunnels where my XM loses signal. Although I would hope a $2500.00 option like my navigation would work better than a hand held

Factory equipped gps in cars isn’t just a gps receiver, they use gyroscopes and accelerometers in conjunction with a map database to adjust for errors or lack/loss of satellite signal. In other words you have lost signal it was just able to show you as still moving based on other information till the signal was regained.

I've got the Garmin Nuvi 660. It's a pretty nice GPS and I love it because I can take it anywhere; so it's great for vacations when I have to rent a car or travel for business. It's accurate but not as accurate as the factory GPS that's in my Expedition and BMW....The best feature of the 660 is the size of the screen. I'd recommend it to anyone...
