I'm thinkin it can't hurt to change the tranny
oil every 5K with the engine. Or is that excessive?

Every 5K is the spec. for the primary-tranny fluid change.

It looks like every 10k in my owners manual, I like 5K better

The MoCo, changed the recommended tranny service from every 5,000 miles to 10,000 miles in 2006. But, to answer your question.....your not gonna hurt anything.
