how would low or high octane effectidle?

low timing and no load shouldn't make a difference.

 

I can get rough idle sometimes with a warm start up but it clears out after a few seconds.

I'd go with fuel grade, even at low rpm the compression ratio is the compression ratio and its high. Another obvious thing is bad gas.

 

9.7:1 is not high, but harley requires you to run super unleaded 91+ octane. more than likely due to their timing map.regular octane fuel will not cause his idle problem (he did not mention he was running regular). timing is dictated by load, rpm, temp, etc... at idle there is no load andminimal timing advance.

since your under warranty, i would not chance trying to fix it yourself and would take it straight to the dealership.

 

I know not to bother with the throttle before starting. And yes, I've only put 93 octane in the tank. I've ridden a few times since then and it hasn't happened again. I'm getting exhaust, SE AC, and SERT tuned hopefully this week. I'll mention it to the dealer.

 

If you only put 93 in the tank then that answers the no brainer question. Any engine with a compression ratio over 9:0 is considered high and therefor can be prone toknock, especially when using regular grade fuels. Perhaps you had bad fuel (or even winter time fuel in a warmer temp).

Sorrygot off on a tangent there.You've solved your problem. Just curious though.....have you bought fuel since then, or were you lagging the engine when you first drove the bike?
