Default Oil cap fitting question

On my 04 sportset. I press the oil cap down to click it. It is not flushed with the houseing. It sticks up just a little bit. This being a new bike to me I never really noticed how it was suposse to be. Is it suppose to be flush or dose it stick up just a little?

The oil cap needs to be pushed down and turned slightly clockwise so that its form follows the contour of the oil-tank cover. It should fit flush with the cover. If you look closely at the cap andits receptacle you'll see how to properly insert it by the longer and shorter chase on either side of the cap.

What Thumper said, but I've found you don't push it all the way down, just about half way. I had the same problem.

It should only fit on one way. Pain in the shorts from what I remember.

You might consider the cap that has integral oil temp gauge - easier to work with and is accurate for measuring oil temp

Here is a pic. After I set the cap in the groves. It turns till it turns no more. Then it snaps down. It can not turn no more after that. My thigh keeps hitting this when I ride.

It isn't flush yet. Put a little oil in the groves, get on top of it, grab it with a rag, twist it in as far as it will go, then press down on the cap to click it in. It should be flush. If it's not flush you may get a little oil past the cap. Crappy design, but that's how it is. Also, do not fill the oil past the half-way mark on the stick, measured hot. This also contributes to leakage and blow through the carb.

Your seat is depressing it and causing it to pop up.........
Remove seat and cycle it up and down rapidly and it might latch better.

But it ain't nuthin to wory about if it is popped up....no oil will leak as long as it is twisted tight.

I had this same problem. I rode with it like this and oil actually came out. Press and turn (using a little muscle) clockwise until the cap screws in. It should be flush. Since I figured this out, i have not had any problems, however I ordered the oil temp cap.

Well I tried all of those things. Still the samething. I don't guess it hurts anything, wanted to see if I could get it down some then my thigh would not pop it all the time. I have use muscel to turn it, but I mean it is asfar as it will go with the groves, so it can't go no more.

Spend $45 for the oil temp. dipstick. It's easy to get on & off, much better than the stock POS, IMO
