Default Tach for bikes with no tach....

I want to make sure that my bike is not idling too low, but as we know the '06 883C does not have a tach. I know Snap-on has a digital tach that is listed in the service manual, but that is a bit out of my price range. Could I just go to my local Advance Auto and get a timing light that has a tach on it, or does anyone have another suggestion on what they have done, other than "doing it by ear"?

Any good light with a tach will work, as long as it will go down to two cylinders. Why not just add a tach to your scoot? no more hooking up the light when you need to make an adjustment.

I probably will get one at some point, if I can find one cheap. Right now I'm looking for the easy way out, with out having to play with electrical things too much.I build computers for a hobby, but never tried to hook up a tach to a bike. Last time I tried to install a stereo in a car, I wound up with no gas guage or turn signals.....still have no clue how I managed that one, but I suppose with good enough instructions, it can't be too hard...I hope.
