Default carb adjustments...

Hey guys, I read on here about the 45/175 jet sizing being stock. After putting on a SE ac and a set of vance and hines short shots I went to check my jet and found a 45/190 on my 05 1200R. After following the directions on here I ended up a little over 3 turns out on the mixture(compared to 3 and a half out when I started) and the idle sits just under 900rpms. I've read about the right range of rpms, but is this normal on a bike? My mpg also dropped from about 48 to 35. I readjusted twice with the same results. I guess I'm just wanting to see if this is right or not, especially that main jet. I bought it used(repoed) but it had the stock pipes and ac on it and came from Illinois, and I'm in Missouri now so altitude shouldn't be that differnet. Any helps appreciated guys!

Welcome,

First, I believe the stock jet sizes should have been 42/175.

I suspect, based on the jet sizes, that sometime in the past, the bike had a high performance set of pipes and high flow A/C installed and was rejetted. For an 05 1200 and your pipes and A/C, I'd bet that the main jet is too large. I would take it down to a 180 and see how it runs and then if necessary go up to a 185. This assumes that there are no other issues affecting performance, like vacuum leaks.

Also, you want to keep the idle RPM's in the 950-1050 range. Low idle speed will result in inadequate oil pressure/flow.

Yeah, I think that 190 may be a bit much on your high. Go to the 180 or 185, Im running 45/185 with a ness big sucker and troublemaker pipes..going to switch my low up though to the next size. (my 1200 came stock with a 180)

I agree with the other posts about the jet size. After you correct that, re-tune the air/fuel mixture. That should improve things.

ok, so I put a 180 in and readjusted everything, the tach is still sitting at 850 andthe bike now seems doggy compared to before... not horrible, just a little slower/less torque. I confused as hell.... I did it twice following directions to a T, even with the girlfriends help watching the tach along with my ear. I'm not deaf, not a genius but not an idiot when it comes to wrenching either.

What do the spark plugs look like? Black and sooty or tan? A happy Harley will have the plugs in between white and tan. Like an off white.
If you are having too much trouble (it sure sounds like it) I recommend taking it to aGOOD indy with a dyno. That will be the only way to get it perfect.
