your right it definately has way more in common with a XLCH, the primary cover, tank, rear fender. those shocks might be stock, but that would mean the covers were removed.
also, the tank had to be lifted, becuase no sportster has a stock peanut tank angled that much. also the oil tank is different
too bad the XLCH came out in '58 and it came stripped of all lights and such. 1959 it came with lights for road use. even then it had the eyebrow mount still used on sportsters today.
yes thats a 64, but its close enough for the XLCH model.
you probably have a late 50s xlch, but why was it registered as a 57 xl? maybe to be street legal during the day? and the lights and everything were added later? who knows
