Default Brake problem

Trying to remove the rear brake caliper on a 93 883. I pulled the two bolts and pushed in on the caliper to retract the piston as the repair book says but the caliper comes up somewhat and then hits something solid and will not come up any further. What is going on. I even hit the caliper with a rubber mallet but it did not help. What is wrong??

It's possible the brake fluid has no place to go when the piston is pushed in. Don't recall if the reservoir top is vented or not. Remove the top and some fluid and see if that helps.

I took the brake line off and when I tap on the caliper, brake fluid squirts out the line hole so there is no pressure on the piston.

Sorry that can't be of help, mine is a 05 and is not the same as yours. Maybe someone with the same year as yours can help.

Dunno for sure if your bike is the same as mine, but I suspect they are fairly similar in design. To actually remove the rearcaliper on my Sportster, it is necessary to pull rear axle from wheel, and I believe there is another bolt that you have to remove to free it.

Give that a try

Trying to remember my 96 sporty. I replaced the pads w/out removing the wheel. Could you pads be catching a wear lip on the rotor?

Thats what im thinking. The caliper should come off and the pads still be on the bike. I have a manual and i did as the manual said. The caliper and the pads go on and off as seperate units. I must have a lip binding somewhere. The book shows it as a very simple project.
