Default battery cover tin not staying latched

New Nightster with battery cover thathas been unlatching--won't staysnapped closedon the road. Had never even been opened. Stopped to find it down 2X yesterday--custom painted tin hanging by one hook latch on the bottom--not good.Cheap, cheap HD plastic snaps--yourbad, HD--could have cost me a new tin and paint job. And I can just imagine the "blond on a motorcyle with her battey cover open" commentsfrom folks behind me!A smart suggestion was to do a temporary fix with a plastic serrated pull tie--looped it through and cut the excess. Holds better that the cheap original snap. Makes me wonder what other parts were skimped on during manufacture. A permanent fix will be a point for discussion at 1K... Anyone else have this problem? How'd you fix it?

I have the same problem with my 883C. The front plastic snap is gone and the rear is broken. I just put a zip-tie on the front loop and it works fine. The bottom latch holds well, I found that out when the cover flew open doing 70 on the highway.

Have the same problem with my 2006 882 custom. Seems like the one latch is not lined up correctly with the holes. Each time i ride, it's bound to fall atleast once. Have not found a solution as of yet

Me too after I put in the fuel pak it seemed to not have enough room in there and it kept popping off. after i relized that the ground cablr was in the way and taking up battery room i fixed the problem and then bought a new clip it cost about a buck fifty a believe. I havn't had a problem since and its been about 8 months.

My front one came off when I put the cover back on after tuning with my SERT, I like to never got that SOB back in the frame right. It is SUPER touchy now and will come off with the slightest push, so I will be looking to get a new one or some other arrangement too.

The clips that hold the battery side absolutley suck!!!! They work mint until you open and close the battery cover aprox. two times. After that I'd replace em. Shitty design but there cheap enough to buy a dozen at a time By the way Ldymjo asked what other parts are cheap well every time I install a new part and find that my good ol american sized wrenches don't fit, I have to swap over to my metric sizes!!!! What the F@*k!!!!! This is a harley right?? I got in a fight with a parts guy at a non harley shop looking for 39mm clip ons, he said "you can go out back and look but it's a harley and it's not going to be metric" haha I wish he were right but atleast I know!

Check out my sticky'd thread for this very problem on the XL forums

A zip tie does you no good when you have to get in there and have nothing to cut it with!

Thanks much for the replies, and links on fixes/previous discussions. I'm buying a package a pull ties, in black, and now have clippers in my pack. It seems HD has a design flaw that's been around for awhile--time for them to take a look and make a permanent fix...

Simple fix, just drill a hole threw the clip where the hole is in the cover and put a zip tie or wire tie threw the hole.

I had my cover fly off once on a highway trip, I've had zero troubles since I've done the zip tie thing.

Harley really needs to come up with a better fastener
