noisy 3rd gear 1971 xlch

I have a very loud chatter in 3rd gear only, still rolls though, but when in 3rd, sounds like an explosion. 1, 2, and 4, gears ok.Anyone have an idea what it might be before I go looking.

busted something inside, check it out before it kills you.

gears are probably worn if its never been opened. just replace it, buy a OEM kit. change the gears and linkages and everything inside there.
