Gas mileage dropped from 55 to 30
Hey all,
I'm new to the forums and I've got my dad's '04 1200R
When my dad first bought the bike he was getting about 55mpg or a bit more.
As soon as he had some work on it the mpg dropped down to 30-35.
He had the stock exhaust drilled out, and the S/E air intake, so the bike did have to be re-jetted. However, the jets used were only the next size up on both the high and low flow.
Has anyone else had the same problem in that much of a drop?
I took it back to the dealership just to make sure that the jets weren't bad or possibly the wrong side but they said it was right and if I went back to stock jets the bike would be running lean.
But when the bike is just idling and warming up I can smell gasoline. So it's definately running rich.
Any suggestions?
I've thought about changing out the exhaust, either back to stock with the slip-ons or other slip ons that would be running fine.
Thanks
JT

Have them hook up some equipment and check out the air/fuel mixture...
Something isn't right, as I'm averaging 50 MPG, and that's with higher performance Screamin' Eagle "E" cams, which have a higher lift and flow more fuel mixture than the stock cams in the 1200 engines.

Thanks guys, I'll probably bring it in tomorrow or wednesday.

Oh, also has anyone had any problems with their stock rear suspension? as soon as I ride with a passenger the thing just bottoms out instantly over the smallest of bumps. My dad had adjusted it a while ago to what should be the heaviest setting...but who knows.
Which way should I turn it out in order for it to be heavier?

Make sure the choke is all the way off. There is a plastic fitting that goes into the carb. Thiscan pull out of the carb when removing the carb to re-jet if it's pulled on hard enough. If this happens, the choke will still be on a little even thought the choke is pushed all the way in. Check the choke cableand make sure the choke is all the way off.
