With that kind of mileage you must spend more time at the pump than riding. Like mentioned before, have it checked out.

Good luck and let us know how it all comes out.

EDIT: Decided to move my post to its own thread so as to not hijack the OP's thread. Thanks

I seem to be getting just under 40mpg on my 97 1200. I have a Super E S&S carb. That is riding hill and dale on the county back roads seldom getting into 5th for more than a few hundred yards. Running pretty easy on the gas to. I like'd to be getting more. I have tuned the low speed jet and it has a brand new air cleaner but it really seams to run rich. a guy that has helped me get started on the carb tuning says the the S&S is just a "run it full bore type of carb" and will always run rich at low or part throttle. I don't want to accept that if I don't have to.

Any one have a S&S getting good millage?

Sorry for high jacking your thread JT The Commi

nah I'm definately no gorilla...more like a mouse...my dad weighs I guess 145 or so and i'm 125lbs.
definately not cracking the throttle or running it hard.
What can I do to tune it myself if the dealership decides to say that there's nothing to be done.

i don't mind the hi-jacking of the posts...the more info on the same problem just means I learn more.

this is a huge difference at the pump compared to when i was riding my buell blast and getting 65-70mpg.

Yeah Ric27, your carb guy is right. If you want great throttle response and fuel economy to boot, try a Mikuni HSR-42.
THe S&S is great for mixing and dumping gas but it's more of a performance carb and your fuel economy will suffer.

I put a Super E on my 1200 and added a Thunderjet. The bike ran great, but I'd be pushing it if I went more than 100 miles on a tank.

A slim chance I guess but is your speedo accurate !

I did a ride with a guy that said we were doing about 70 the entire trip yet I said I was only showing
we were doing a little over 60 ...

Although I don't remember checking the trip meters ..

I'm pretty sure it is. I might as well check that since it is somethin' easy to check. But it doesn't really help too much since i'm running rich.

Well I took it to the shop yesterday and waited around for 6 hours while they worked on it (pretty busy and understaffed that day) They put in the 42 jet for the slow but left the main jet at what ever size is the next up from stock. Which i did tell them I wanted 45/180 but they didn't listen so i'll be taking it back to them pretty soon to put in the other jet.

What is the stock size Jet for the 1200R?
