Default stock sportster running hot???

Greetings from Atlanta....after decades on an Ironhead, I just bought a 1200R (2008)...what a great bike....I am wondering about mods and some things the dealership told me.Has anyony had this mod done: Scream eagle a/c with the Scream eagle pipesw/ just the Stage 1 download and had some good/noticable performance from that???...also I was told that to pass emissions, HD sends thier bikes out runnning very lean, hence a very hot running motor, and the above mod I mentioned will still run hot.......is this true to the point of affecting longevity, and do they really run that hot???mine does not seem to.....dealer ship claims a race tune will take care of that, but that is big $$$$$$ as you know......what is your take on a power commander?..and then picking and chosing maybe some rush slipons and having a bit more versitiliy??.thanks, Robbie

Do the SE pipes & A/C with the download and you will be good to go. The bike is lean from the factory but this should fix things right up without going overboard $$$ wise. (still not cheap though) I also recommend changing to a good synthetic oil at the 1000 mile service.

And Welcome.

Borrow an infrared heat gun/thermometer and shoot the heads at the sparkplug right after riding it.....you don't want to see much over 300 degrees front/rear.

Mine's running 330 front 300 rear(just checked today)....I need to tweek the map on my PCIII to cool the front down a little.

Many people here that discuss engine temperatures and "How hot is to hot" use an oil temp. dipstick to monitor oil temps. While oil temp. will vary depending on the air temp., most people report running between 180* - 200* on a warm summer day using a good synthetic oil. Stop & go driving in the dead of summer (100*) might push the oil temp. upwards of 225*.

A petroleum based oil will start to fail at 250*. Synthetic oils are good to a bit over 300*.

Pardon the thread jack, but I couldn't find the original thread on a quick search. YoDaddy, how did that bike work out that you were looking at for your friend? you were unsure if it was a fuel or electrical problem. Narrow that down yet? (curiosity; I like to keep an ear to the ground).

Thanks, and sorry for the interruption in the thread.
