I agree Drum...after reading about the VOES, it only advances/retards timing.....Timing sensor is a possibility.
cHarley, you n Drum might have hit it with the gas cap....I don't have more details at the moment....he's a friend of a friend and ain't met him yet...They'll be here tomorrow and I can pick his brains then.
All these suggests are going to help, tho.

Also... Check your plug wires going into your coil. Pull the boot back on the wire a bit. Insert the wire all the way and then slide the boot forward onto the coil. This was my problem. It felt like the wires were seated but they were not. The little pullback push forward trick guarantees it.

He's trailering it over here tomorrow....needs help fingering out electrical problem.
Bike will be running fine, then backfire and die.....let bike sit a day and it will start and run fine....then going down the road later it will do it again....really hard to restart if it will start at all once it happens.
Bike stock except for custom tank 2 years ago.
Tried new coils already.
Anyone here run into this?

Well..........Pulled tank......Flushed it.......Pulled fuel lines and flushed them.
Waited till it was cold and it started. Place hair dryer on ign module andto get it really hot and it fired right up....ran it 45 minutes with fan on engine...it rapped up like it was a new bike saying "ride me", so I tossed my leg over it and clicked it into gear....As soon as I released the clutch and twisted the wick,it died and refused to start....popped flames out the exhaust, but refused to start n run.
Ok, tomorrow the carb comes off and I tear that sucker down and see what's clogging it.
Yeah, it's a fuel problem.
The more I fruck with this, the more I like my injected '07.[:@]

Did you use the hair dryer on the ignition module, or the ignition sensor????? The modules ussually don't have much issues with heat, it's the pick-up sensor for the ignition that tend to have issues with heat when then go bad. You'll need to take the timing cover off to get the hair dryer on it.
