Default RE: When is a bike a "lemon"?

In Maryland the law states that the vehicle manufacturer gets 4 tries to fix a problem. If it is not fixed, I would then write them a certified letter, return receipt, and include my records. At that point the manufacturer gets one more chance to fix the problem. If they can't, the I get a new vehicle.

Well, I haven't written that letter. However, the owner of the dealership where I bought my bike, called me, and we have an agreement. I gave him one last chance to put this bike right and if it is not put right, then he'll give me a new bike. I pick the bike up tomorrow and then we'll see what we see.

Thanks for your feedback. In fact thanks to all. It has been very helpful. I do believe in the end the dealer will make it right. I just have to through the process step by step.

Well? It's been three days, which may not be enough time, but what's the verdict so far?

Well, I let the dealer keep it until today, so the service mgr. could test ride it to death.... which is fine with me. What they found, so far, is just a loose battery cable. I'll be talking to him today and hopefully picking it up this evening. We'll see what happens. Thanks for asking.

When you can squeeze the bike into a shot of tequila...

sorry, that's a lime. What the heck do we use lemons for again? *grin*

As strange as it sounds, a loose battery cable (particularly if it's on the ground side) could cause all sorts of strange problems. It's very possible that this $2.00 part could be the cause of alot of your issues. It would definitely cause the bike to misfire and die off.

Don't ask me how I know this.... *grin*

Anyways, I really hope this solves it!

Well, I picked the bike up last night and it rode great. I guessa loose battery cablecould cause all sorts of problems. The owner of the dealership met with me last night when I picked it up and gave me a $400 gift card and said that if I have anymore problems with the bike that he would take care of me getting a new bike. You couldn't ask for more from a dealer than this guy is putting out. I hope this fix is the last one. All the other problems I've been having, excep the leaks, could have been caused by something as simple as a loose battery cable.

GOOD DEAL! I really hope it's all fixed this time.

If that's all the problem was, it sure was a fore-head slapping lesson in KISS diagnostics for the shop. And I doubt they'll soon forget this!

This post is to all of you who responded to my question. Thanks for all the advise and comments. It was all very helpful. I got my bike back Tuesday night. I didn't ride Wednesday because of a forecast of snow here in the DC area. I rode today and all I can say is, that bike has never run this well. The power curve is smooth and even... no hesitations at all, eventhough it's 19 degrees here. It was smooth at painfully slow speeds in traffic and it rocked on the interstate. Let's hope it keeps up this way.

Thanks again... Dave
