Default 1985 Sportie for sale Is this guy crazy?

SO I check out this ad on craigslist http://westernmass.craigslist.org/mcy/561387695.html
So I expected to see a pristine version of an 85 sportie. Instead what I found was an assemblage of swap meet parts where the chrome was half there or severly scuffed. the front tire is dryrotted and the rear is not far behind. He confessed that he had never done the brakes on it EVER! He also confessed that he did replace the chain but I asked him if he swapped the sprockets at the same time he said no. NO? So I offered him 4grand on the spot, he refused and called me this morning offering me a 4200 deal. I declined. IMHO it's not worth more than 3800 if that. Whats your opinion?
Oh by the way the tank is a split widie and was painted with a rattle can and it shows.

Unless you have your heart set on that year, walk away and don't turn back. If the maintenance was that bad from what you could see, imagine what you would get when you dig into it. There are better sportster deals out there.

Is a 85 worth $3,800 in s#$% shape? Mint like new low miles not a rebuild that needs nothing replaced maybe $5000 to5500 If you like that year.

You didn't say what "low mileage" actually means. The brakes may not needed replacing if it's under 10K miles. In any case, based on what you said about the bikes condition, I'm surprised you offered 4K.

Yeah I thought so much. He probably would have better luck if he wasn't trying to make it look like a bobber. I was being generous with he 4000 dollar offer. I saw potential in being able to bring it back to being an 85 sportie. In his defense he did still have the sportie tank. I would have swapped that back in a heartbeat. Like some of you said, there are going to be plenty of sportie deals coming with spring fast approaching.
He should have jumped on the 4grand. His loss. Now I would't give him any more than 3800. Thanks for the responses guys...see ya on the twisties.

By the way Kelly Blue Book puts that bike at 3420 dollars. I a assuming that kelly's factors in some aging.

Maybe a grand and that's only if you have confidence the engine and drive train are OK. Personally I would let it go there lots of better deals out there. JMO
