Best place to buy rear 40 spoke wheel?
Hey gang,
Been casusally shopping around prices on a new 16 x 3.5 or 18 x 3.5 40 spoke rear wheel to replace my stock solid wheel when its time for a new rear tire (which will be soon enough).
Just curious about any deals folks have found that have done the swap.
I've been keeping an eye on most of the ebay deals (all of which I have to swap bearings anyway adding about another $20 to the cost.) I would like to find some chromed aluminium rims as most are chromed steel like my front one (which is rusting away on the inside) but I'll likely settle for chromed steel if I can get a chromed hub vs. alum. and chrome or SS spokes. Would like to find one less than $200.
Just got a qoute from Hogprofor$599 for a sinlge 40 spoke steel wheel, what are these guys smoking. Also waiting to hear from Black Bike Wheels.

I like the way you guys think. I am a fan of spokes as well - particularly on a Sportster. (plus I'd rather have the wheels match)
Any thoughts on having the rim sealed so you can still run a tubeless tire? Or are you concerned with it? I hear people worried about roadside repairs, etc. but I've had bikes with spokes in the past and I've never given any thought to running tube vs. tubeless. Maybe I've just been lucky, too - never had any roadside flats.

I just sent them an email asking what it would cost over the chrome to have them powdered. Can't be that bad. I just want the rims and hubs black..stickin with the chrome/steel spokes.
As for the tube, tubeless...I wouldn't be too concerned. A front blow out could be a lot more dangerous than a rear (wouldn't want either). So, if the MOCO was concerned, I would doubt they would put so many spoked fronts out there.
I have never had a problem with my front. Same tire/tube for about 5 years now. Going new this year though...she's lookin a little bare.

On the solid spokes I think you would be right. I have seen some that powdered the whole wheel then ground down the tops of the spokes to the hub that didn't look too bad. I had the sissy bar brackets powdered by the same guy that did my bar and handlebars and they look great.
