Would a peanut tank from an 04-06 1200 Roadster bolt right on to my 04 1200 Custom? What about from an older carburated 1200? (pre-04) For instance, I found a 97 model 3.3 gal peanut tank - would it bolt up?

I'll buy your Custom tank. Hell, trade me if you want. I hate this Peanut tank.

RE: Tank Swap
Actually, I just noticed your bike is an 08 - Fuel Injected. I think I'd need a carburated one for a direct swap/bolt on. (I'm guessing the petcock would be different).
As far as going to a smaller tank - it is just for looks. I think the peanut tank looks good on a sportster - so I'd be willing to sacrifice practicality for the look I want. (If I want practical, I have acar that is very practical - even has air conditioning and a stereo. LOL!) Besides, my Sportster is more of my "around town" bike. My other bike is comfy for longer rides and has a big tank - so I don't mind if I make the Sportster a bit more "uncomfortable" and impractical.
Just kicking around an idea - swapping to a peanut tank/solo seat/ and chopping the rear fender ala Nightster style. I like the overall shape of a nightster, but I prefer chrome over the blacked out look and I wanted a carb. I had thought of making my bike into sort of a "chromed" version of a Nightster - (Call it the "Brightster"? LOL)

Or the "Blingster"?
Or the "Blingster"?
If I can get a tank and an extra rear fender for chopping (I already have a solo seat), then I could make the swap and still swap back to stock if I didn't like it.
Of course, I'm also thinking that the "C" speedometer may not work with the peanut tank - it looks like it might hit? I'd also need some mini apes to finish off the look.

RE: Tank Swap
yeah it will hit. Mine came with a straight riser 6" I believe and the same speedo set up. That worked well with the stock peanut tank.
There's some other members that have had some really good ideas on this forum as to what to do about the speedo.
Check around or start a thread about it.
BTW I'd be interested in seeing what a "blingster" looks like.

I can swap out the internals for us. And yes, it is black. Say the word...

Here is my attempt at photoshop. It would need some different handlebars, maybe some short pipes, and a bunch more chrome (chrome or polished fork lowers, chrome pulley, chrome belt guard, etc) to complete it. I even thought of drilling some "lightening" holes in the belt guard (ala Nightster) and then having it chromed just to add to the effect...
