What is the size of the nut that connects the negative battery cable to the stud on the crankcase on a 05 xl1200?

11mm, if I recall correctly.
You might want to use a 1/4 inch socket with an extension and 1/4 u-joint.

11mm does look like what it is. I was just able to get a 11mm open end on it, but the angle is wrong. Tried gettting a 11mm socket on it, but with wasn't able to with all that is above and around the nut. Gonna go to Sears and buy an 11mmX17mm offset ratcheing box end wrench and hopefully that will do it. Once I have the right tool, should be OK.

I love my Sportster, but I have to say that this is a **** poor design for the negative cable.

Johnny's leadin ya right, but use a long extension and reach from the right side by the oildtank with the bike on the jiffy stand

 

I use a 1/4" flexie cable. Sears, about $10.00
