As cHarley said get this. It works better and easy to get on and off properly.

If you have to replace it, you might look at the Oil Temp. Dipstick as a replacement. It installs and removes easier than the stock stick and gives you a temp. guage to boot.

I would change to the one with the temp on it and see what happens it is a pretty cheap fix.

Probably because it was never closed.

You have to turn it to align it to the oil tank , then push it down.

Now how would I know this ?

I have a question for all who own a sporster. Irecently purchaseda 2006883 Custom and after riding a few times I love it. However, the past two times I've rode it, i've had problem with the oil filler cap. Due to the location (almost directly under the seat) it somehow opens during riding. For those not familiar with this cap, you have to press which pops the cap up then you must turn counterclockwise to remove. When this cap 'pops' to the open position, it allows oil to exit the tank, causing a mess and a creates a huge potential problem.

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this same problem or have heard of something similar. I was at a HD dealer today and it seems like the 07 and 08 models have a small space between the seat and the oil cap. My seat basically sits right on top of this, which makes me believe something is not right. I bought this bike with only 1100 miles so I can't imagin anything could be seriously wrong with it.
Sounds like Valveguide is onto something, I do not see the poster talk about rotating the cap, only snaping it down.
Vasick883: - are you turning the cap 90 degrees before snaping it down - when properly installed the top of the cap is perfectly flush with the tank. I do not think the snapping action has anything to do with sealing - the "o" ring seals when rotated (screwed) in. the pop up only makes the top of the cap able to be rotated. If you are installing properly, check the o ring / replace the cap

The threads on a stock cap can go on two ways but, only one way is the correct way to screw it in. I agree that it sometimes is a pain but, if aligned correctly, it shouldn't be a problem. You may have a faulty cap in need of replacing.

I have the Oil Temp Dipstick, it's great. I did ride for about 9,000 miles with the pop-up dipstick on my 06 883. Never had a problem with it popping open. Sounds like just a defective cap. Depending on the original date the bike was placed in service, that could be a warranty item.

Are you sure the seat is OEM? If not, it's either the replacment seat isn't allowing the proper amount of clearance space between the seat and sidecover, orthere's too much weight being placed on that part of the seat due to short legs or extra body weight, or any combination of the above. JMO

My son has the same problem. His 06 does it every time he rides. He has even changed seats to the Sundowner. He weighs in about 250 .I think it has something to do with his weight and the size of his legs

I had heard the biggest PIA was getting it off and back on properly. Well, I had to see, so took it off and checked oil, and put it back on, properly I thought. But it kept popping up. I looked at it and thought this just doesnt look right. When u screw it in, when u think it;s right, just give it another quarter turn clockwise. It's a little tight and hard, but once u do that and snap it down. It will stay there. Never had another problem once I figured it just wasn't all the way in before pushing it down.

Ding ding ding jerryh57 is the winner. I went and fooled around with it this morning and sure enough when the cap clicks down, it not in. I gave it another quarter turn (with some effort) and it now sits flush with the rest of the tank. That should do it! Thank you all for your input!

Carlo,

On your gas cap......don't attempt to remove it with your finger tips....simply place your palm flat on it-push down and turn your whole wrist and arm...It'll spin with no problem....I consider it a anti-tamper device and I'm glad for it.
