Default 2up riding on a Sportster?

Hi Everyone,

Always loved the Sportsters. What a hot-rod they are.

Just wondering, how do the 1200 Custom's handle 2-up riding.
I'm about 180lbs and my wife is probably in the 140ish range(She'll kill me if she sees this . . . ).

Do you think the sporty would have a problem with this?

I know about the sundowner that would seem pretty cool also a backrest would be cool.

If anyone has any suggestions, ideas or insight it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

-Mark.

I do it all the time. In addition to the Sundowner and sissybar your going to want a set of 412 Progressive shocks. The stock shocks will bottom out over almost every bump with your 2up load. You will also like the improved ride of the 412's when running solo.

2-up is definately doable with some upgrades already mentioned. If you plan to do a lot of 2-up, I would not buy a Sportster.

Do it all the time on my 883, should be no problem with a 1200.

the engine, 883 or 1200 can handle it, a 900 bike is by no means small or beginner.

the sportster is a little cramped, its meant for solo riding. you can make it work if she is on the small side, but its still not for all the time. a backrest and nice seat would make a big difference.

My riding buddy and his OL rode 2up for many years on a Ironhead, combined weight ~300lbs. It was a custom w/solo seat, she would put a little pillow on the fender as a pad and off they'd go. She started riding her own bike solo when she was 16 so she knew how to be a good passenger.

A 1200 is by no means a small bike and will handle 2 up with ease. My bro weighs in at 230 hil girlfriend is around 180. they ride 2 up on an 883 all the time with no problem. most of the time it's an all day ride too. Just get a comfy seat for her and a decent back rest, maybe some bags for overnight rides and have at it.

I ride 2 up all the time. have a mustang touring seat and tall sissy bar. no problems. will look into progressive shocks soon since we bottom out once in a while. I'm 225 lb and she's around 130 lb. I don't feel cramped or crouded. I enjoy haveing some one warm and soft to lean against. plenty of power with th 1200. just my 2 cents. comfy seat and back rest will make a big difference.
50 cegree's here today, can't wait to ride after work and this weekend.
Us southern boys got it made!!!

My 883 handles that much weight. The only think I don't like is when you go to put your feet down at a stop. The passengers shoe tips rub on the backs of your legs and I tend to walk to bike to a stop more so. I tell them to rest their feet farther back on the peg and its all good. Unless they wear a 12 shoe like my OM. LOL
