We ride two-up on occasion, but the sporty really isn't meant for it. The passenger is way too close to the rider, which I find distracting.

The bike can certainly handle it, in terms of power, and with the proper suspension, I just don't like the close quarters.

900 lbs is almost 2 sportsters. Typo?

the engine, 883 or 1200 can handle it, a 900 bike is by no means small or beginner.

the sportster is a little cramped, its meant for solo riding. you can make it work if she is on the small side, but its still not for all the time. a backrest and nice seat would make a big difference.
I think Joseph was refering to the 883 as a "900 bike"... as in 900cc.

It does not worry me that she is close, in fact the only way I know she is there is she holds onto my keg.
Have a Bitch Bar coming for her so she can sit back a bit and relax a bit more.
She has never been on a bike in her life until I got this one so at least she trusts me, stuuupppid women [8D]

I must say though the Sundowner is definately a large improvement on the stock seat for both of us. Only
I dont like how much closer it sits me on the tank but I guess I will get used to it.

Add another 2 up for me. We ride all the time 2 up on the 883 and can go all day. I have no complaints.

I meant a 900cc class bike.

My riding buddy and his OL rode 2up for many years on a Ironhead, combined weight ~300lbs. It was a custom w/solo seat, she would put a little pillow on the fender as a pad and off they'd go. She started riding her own bike solo when she was 16 so she knew how to be a good passenger.
I just did that today givng the girlfriend a ride home, I went solo with my sporty but keep the passenger pegs on. I had to fold a towel over a few times and lay it there on the fender. haha

I don't do a lot of 2 up riding, but the 1200 can certainly handle it power-wise (I'm 180, she's 140).I do agree that a Sportycan bea bit cramped, but I currently don't have a need for a bigger bike unless the OLdecides to ride more. I have the 5 position shocks that come stock with the Custommodels and I keepthem adjusted all the way up, but I stillbottom out too frequently, even running solo.Since I'm done adding chrome (for now!!) I'm currently looking for progressive shocks anda solo seat.

Ditto, we are a combined 280 lbs and have no probs..my lady is also a first time passenger on this bike, so while she is learning to get confident with leaning , I like to have her wrap around my waist and close, so she has to lean with me, or, actually, she doesnt have to do anything but hold on. Plus I like being close to her, full stop. The engine seems to handle it well...no rpbs with bottoming out, and a stock seat which seems comfortable so far...there's a backrest but she uses that once we hit our street and thats it....baby steps...

Thruster, you're gonna have to show me how you change up the rear shock settings.. hmmm, maybe the Breakfast Creek Pub lunch is in order hey....

I go 240 and the wife goes 140, we ride 2 up all the time with a stock suspension. Yes we bottom out some times but you just have to ride accordingly.

Hi Everyone,

Always loved the Sportsters. What a hot-rod they are.

Just wondering, how do the 1200 Custom's handle 2-up riding.
I'm about 180lbs and my wife is probably in the 140ish range (She'll kill me if she sees this . . . ).

Do you think the sporty would have a problem with this?

I know about the sundowner that would seem pretty cool also a backrest would be cool.

If anyone has any suggestions, ideas or insight it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

-Mark.
It can be done, but it's the reason I got rid of my '95 Magna; it's just not designed as a 2-up machine. The dyna would be a better starting point if you're still looking at keeping in a lower budget. I specifically got the solo-seat base model (and even added the removable luggage rack that sits where the pillion seat goes) to deter any notion of "Dad, can I have a ride on the sportster?". That's what the Street Glide is for.
