RE: xl1200n Transmition ?
Wow thanks for all the imput everyone,
It just feels, and sounds, to me like I'm really winding up the motor at around 70-75 or so, but I'm still new to the bike, and with no tach to go off of I wasn't sure. I just finished the break-in period last Tuesdy (one week after buying it), and so I haven't gotten to take it above 75+ much due to the cold weather, and work. I was just worried that I might break her. But now I feel better so I can ride her like I stole her.
Thanks,
Robert

Break in is very important.
Warm her up well before breaking her. 5-6k rpm, hours at 90 are okay if she is warm.
The chart did not convert from xls. to pdf. to .jpg well. PM me if you want a better copy to reference your speed/rpm in each gear.

mine will cruise at 90 in fourth gear, I cant imagine someone wanting a 6 speed tranny but
then I dont drive my bike over 110 mph.
estmated rmps per mph 1200 at 4200 rmp (optimal power band for a sportster)
1=32
2=42
3=62
4=81
5=95
at 6000 rpm (top end for a stock sporty)
1=42
2=60
3=85
4=110
5=130
granted my bike aint stock but the mods are not inside the engine. I drove 100 mph most of the way back from atl to augusta a few weeks ago in an hour and a half = 100 mph most of the way. My scooter will rev to 7k so it will do 50 in first and75 in second
95 in third... i dont know too much after that, i never wind out the higher gears. But if it had a 6 spped i think it would roll faster
than 160 easy and thats just a lil over the top for my age. Just ride it like its made to ride and you will find a 6 speed is
completely uncalled for

A stock Sporty will run out of horsepower long before you reach the theoretical top speed for 5th gear, let alone for a 6 speed tranny.

Well that backs up Pococj statement then, you run out of power before you hit the theory max. You had a hill and a bike thats NOT stock...
Im glad the OP got his question answered to his satisfaction tho.

I have consistantly gotten within 10 mph of my max theoretical and hit the max with the assistance of a hill. Only mods are intake and exhaust.

Six speed transmissions are available for 2003 earlier sportsters.Sadly harley did away with the trap door transmissions in 2004.With the trap door the whole tranny would slide out the side of the cases making it fairly easy to slip in a baker six speed with out engine dissassembly.
