Default Headlight help.

Have a 2002 sportster custom. Putting a new headlamp in and can not get it to light. I am running out of ideas. I have tried everything I can think of. The light didn't work when I bought the bike. I traced thee harness back to the connector under the tank. The connector going to the headlight has 3 wires and a blank, the connector under the tank where it plugs in is getting power but onlyto the blank. I am totally lost on this one. An help or suggestions are appreciated. All I have left to do on the bike is get this working and adjust the clutch. Then it's time to have some fun.

Starting from the fuse block, power runs through the "Lights" fuse to the handlebar Hi/Lo light switch. From there it goes to the connector you found under the tank, 2 wires, one for high beam and one for low beam. Ignore the unused terminal you found (position lamp HDI only). If you don't have power on either the hi or low beam wires on the connector under the tank (pins 2 & 3) then you likely have a bad Hi/Lo switch or no power to that switch from the fuse block.

Thanks for the common sense approach. Sometimes I get so caught up I go right past the basic's. I was thinking the switch just by the fact that the turn signals all work and share the same fuse.

If you get into the wiring to the headlight, turn signals, etc that in under the tank, you'll find many more circuits and pin connectors than you would think. There is a boat load of wiring along the backbone, under the fuel tank. As cHarley said, start from the fuse block and work forward. It could very possibly be just one of those pin connectors has gotten loose.
