Didja ever wonder... if the metric system hadn't come along, would the "Sportster 883" be a "Harley 53"? Or a "Sportster 1200" be a "Harley 74"? And what happen to the "hugger"?

"Back in the day" (1957) when Harley introduced the Sportster, it had been built to compete head-on with the British Twins (BSA, Norton, Enfield, Triumph, etc.) and those bikes were all known in size by their metric displacement in cc's (500cc's, 650cc's and 750cc's mainly). Consequently, when the Sportster made its debut it was introduced as an "883" cc to immediately show it was bigger and more ferocious than its intended competition (and it was!). Hence, the Sportster has always pretty much remained with the cc designation for the engine size so that direct comparisons with the bikes it was competing with was never lost.
