Default removing tank trim

04-06 4.5 gal tank....Stock on Customs.

Anyone out there removed the "chrome" tank trim piece on your gas tank? I'm leaning toward a leather tank bra or just a naked look for the tank.

I'm looking for guidance for removing the trim piece without destroying it or scarring the tank/paint.

Thanks.

Joe

Fishin line, pulled between tank and trim like a string saw. Alcohol will remove adhesive left overs.

Thanks for the info.

Being $130 new, I'm inclined to hold on to this in case I ever want it back on. Anyone know if I can buy the adhesive pad to reinstall? Any idea how much that will cost and where to go to get it?

In place of the rim piece, I plan on putting the studded tank and fender bibs to match the studded solo seat, all from Mustang.

Check this out.. https://www.hdforums.com/m_85317/tm.htm

You can get automotive attachment tape in any autobody supply house for reattachment at a later date.

Thanks to the replies, emails, and links. Most helpful.

I'm done. Total time: maybe 30 minutes. Pics below....

I started at the bottom after removing the seat. I used dental floss to slide between the trim and tank. Single strands snapped so I used 4 twisted together. I slipped a small piece of cardboard behind the floss to keep it from binding and snapping. Once I separated the trim from the tank I used Goo-Gone and one of plastic sticker scrapers to remove the rest of the adhesive. I wet the adhesive with Goo-Gone and let it sit for a minute or two and then it comes off easy without disolving into a huge mess. Once clean, I used Harley Gloss to restore everything to bling status.

Afterthoughts: The stock gas cap has a tiny wiggle without the tank trim to brace it. Its not a big deal but I'll probably look for a new cap now anyway - a little plain now. The trim didn't have as much adhesive as I thought it would; just two skinny strips up and a single one around the hole. Noting how simple this was and how easy it will be to replace if I want, I recommend this to anyone who might want to change the look of your sporty tank. The most it will cost you is the cost of the adhesive to put it back on.

Thanks again.
