Default Void Warranty

I have a question for all you sportster owners who bought their bike new from the dealer...

from what i understand there is some kind of dealer warranty that comes with buying new (like a 1000mile check up or some free scheduled maintenance?)

anyway....

my question to you all is what of these modifications, if any, would void such a dealer warranty:

-Stage 1 (all non-harley parts..... like V&H exhaust, fuelpak, k&n air filter...... something like that)
-Headlight change
-Handlebar change
-Chopper forks

am i under some misconception here as to how this type of thing works?

thanks

I am not sure about your voiding warranty question.

However, I am interested if there is a free 1000 mile checkup. Is this true? If so, what do they actually do during this checkup?

If any of thoughs add-ons can be proved 100% that cause the problem, then warranty will be voided

when i bought my 06 883L i got the first year services free, i got my 1000mile and 2500mile check up free. the 1000 mile the change all fluids and check all nut and bolts for tightness and make any adjustments to cables primary and what else they need to do it all in your owners manual.

Not all dealers offer the 1000 mile for free. I'd probably go so far as to say that most do not, but in any case this checkup is not included as part of the warranty, though you want to have it done to avoid them voiding the warranty.

As for installing after market parts, the general rule I've heard is that they have to show that the part you installed caused the issue you want service on. Of course, since the fuel pak, ac and slip-ons affect engine performance you never know what they might claim. If you're worried you can always hedge your bets and have the dealer install those parts.

Of course, with the other parts I would imagine if your front wheel falls off they could always say you installed the forks incorrectly.

anything you upgrade on your bike, save the stock pieces. so if something happens to your bike, you can put the stock stuff back on. thats what i do.

The dealer would have to have substantial proof that an aftermarket part caused a warranty claim..some maybe obvious some may not. The real problem is the headache you would have to go through to prove them wrong.
If an engine intake valve began to leak and you have a fuel pak installed, theyare likely to blame iton that....now you have to try to prove them wrong, it would be such a grey area where neither of you could necessarily provide substantial evidence in your favor. The dealer is likely to win since your the one who put the fuel pak on andsince HD did not design the bike to havea fuel pak...you are most likely to lose.
Another scenario...the engine developes an oil leak and the dealer tries to blame it on the fact that you didn't use HD oil, they are likely to lose because it would be a bit far fetched of a claim.
My Point is unless the bike is all stock, warranty claims could become a headache.
