If you like the tank on the 04-05 customs, then you may want to consider going your HD dealer and buy one. Otherwise I would say consult the JP Cycles catalog.

I put a fat bob tank with the dash mount on my 2000 sportster. You can get fat bob tanks without the dash mount though. Most aftermarket parts catalogs have them. I see them on Ebay from time to time also.

 

You can get the new custom tank, but will need to modify it to fit the older bikes. They have a king tank which has the peanut look and is the same size as the custom (gal. wise). You can get the original Sportster tank (3.3 gal) that will fit your bike or a few others up to 4.2 gal. Paughoco makes a number of tanks for the Sportster, that's where I got my, a Porkster, which looks like the original but bigger.

 

I put a fat bob tank on my old Sportster and got it from Drag Specialties. They also has several others to choose from. Installation didn't require any metal fabrication, just rerouting the wires and speedo. Since the tank came unfinished, I pulled the fenders and repainted the whole shebang. Turned out pretty cool.
