Default Tool Basics

I have figured out that doing as much work on my bike as I can will save me a lot in the long run.
What would ya'll consider to be the basic items needed for doing most of the repair, removal,
and installs. All input will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

A standard mechanic's socket set, a bike lift, a set of torx and a torque wrench. Plus an ample supply of duct tape.

Unfortunately, your "made in the USA" Harley comes from all over the globe.

You will need both SAE & Metric, (sockets, open/closed combo wrenches and socket drive hex/allen wrenches).
Most of the socket work can be done with 3/8 drive butyou will also need a 1/2 drive SAE socket set also.

A set of Torx bitsT15 T20 T25 T27 T30 T40 T45 T50. These will use 1/4 & 3/8 drive.
Note all of the above Torx bits are usually available in a 7 piece set (sears craftsman) except the T27. For some reason this size is not included in most sets and usually you have to purchase it seperatly.

Dont forget ratchet drive adapters to go between 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" in both directions and various extensions.

2 Torgue wrenches - 1 in inch lbs & 1 infoot lbs.
Screwdriver set
Needle Nose pliers
Diagnoal cutters
Slip Joint pliers
Adjustable wrenches in 6" 8" 10"

I'm sure there are a few more items but that should get you going.

cHarley provided a good list of tools. Other necessary supplies, are Lock tite blue (acase of it should get ya started),anti seize paste, and other normal shop supplies.

Oh, and don't forget the garage refrigerator to keep the beer close at hand. [sm=icon_cheers.gif]

Sears had a metric 3/8's drive hex head set for $19.95, some of the fastners are SAE standard, others are metric, go figure. Sale was Friday and Sat.

Use the duct tape to strap it all to your rear fender.

The other thing I forgot was a pair of c-clip or spring clip pliers. Its the first thing I bought when I replaced the footpegs. Also needed when replacing clutch or brake levers.

Make sure to get "Torx-Plus" not standard Torx bits.

Here is a great buy:
