Yes, the road salt is very corrosive, years ago I know a guy from Sweden, he said that in his country they don't put salt on the roads in winter, they use ashes instead, they won't be corrosive to motorised vehicles. Maybe one of our Scandanavian friends will be able to confirm that ashes arfe used on their roads.
Her in the UK, 220 million years ago there was a sea under what is now the county of Cheshire, when the sea dried up it left huge rock salt deposits 150 metres under the land surface, the salt in Cheshire has been mined for around 2000 years. The Winsford rock salt is used for road gritting and cooking / table salt.

I use 45f as my cutoff but so long as it is sunny outside I've found even down to 35f isn't too bad here in New Mexico. The roads at my house aren't paved so my main concern is mud if it's rained or snowed recently. That stops me from heading out more than anything else.
Today it was around 50f so after I finished the work I had to get done I went out and rode 80 miles. Just got my new motorcycle a few weeks ago so I'm trying to get through the 500 mile break-in period sooner rather than later.

Anything under sunny and 50 is too cold for my old, retired butt. Even with full leather pants and coat!
Exception = Christmas, Birthday (12/30) and New Years if not raining. But, in the PNW it's rare not to have rain on those days.
I much prefer 73 and overcast for nice distance rides. Above 80 with traffic is too hot also.
I'm weird that way.

Around 25f if I'm certain the roads aren't icy. My commute is 18 miles each way at around 50 mph, no stops and starts, no traffic. So if I can keep the wind out of my clothes, I'm good for the 30 minute ride.
I've discovered how good chainsaw chaps are at keeping my legs warm. I have a black set, so they don't look too out of place on the bike. And they are absolutely effective at keeping the cold off the front of my legs for the 30 minute ride.
