I'm down to getting quotes on the job from several shops in my area now, and I hoped anyone who has done it could chime in and tell me if it was a good or bad move. Thanks for the input!

I haven't heard of many problems at all with 2003 and earlier Sportster conversions. I'd say go for it.

 

Depends... If you love the bike and don't mind being economically married to it, then do the upgrade.
Consider,though, that the bike will always wear an 883 serial number and it will run differently than a factory 1200 because they are geared differently. You also should consider that you are buying something on faith that might not turn out well.
I sold/bought when I realized that it would be cheaper and easier to just get the bike I wanted after a complete inspection and test ride

 

As has been said, the bike will forever be titled as an 883. So, if you plan to keep the bike a long while,and as long as you are willing to put the bucks out that you'll not get back, do it. I personally would neverconsiderbuying a used883 that's been bumped to 1200.

 

I did the 1200 coversion on my new 883c after i got itbroken in i think it sounds and runs as good as any 1200 can't tell any differance i have had both my brother and i done the conversion in one weekend cost be $500 dollars changed the jugs rings and pistons well worth it.

That's a nice lookin scoot beendad. I'd say go for it since it's YOUR bike and if that's what you wanna do. I ride a 1200... wouldn't settle for an 883 when I bought it. Can't say that I blame ya bro... Thanks forthe responses so far. It's an 03 ann model and to be honest, I'm planning on keeping it to hand down to my son someday, and hopefully it will stay in the family for along time to come. Jamestown HD told me they would give me 4500 for it in trade when I went in there looking at new bikes, but the combo of wanting to keep it and not really being able to justify spending the money on a new one right now really made spending 800 bucks on the conversion seem like the right way to go! My main curiousity is ; does anyone have any STRONG feelings on the conversion itself, hopefully based on having had it done? Bad and good experiences, I'd like to hear them all!

 

Thanks for the compliment BT! I've found a lodal Indy, Wicked Twins, that I think I'll use to do the work. The two guys, Bob and Marv, do all the work themselves, they don't send anything out. Plus they seemed really honest compared to alot of the other shops. One of the questions that I asked all 5 shops I went to was "What is your warrantee like" and alot of the responses I got were to the effect of "warrantee against what?", like they wanted me to spell it out for them and perhaps there would be different answers to different problems. I had one place tell me when I asked about leaks "It won't leak" like I had really offended him with my question! Wicked Twins was very upfront about the whole thing, provided me with several numbers of customers to call and just gave me a very good feeling in general!

 

I just took my '07 883L in to have the 1200 conversion done. They said it will be around $1500 once all is said and done. It's extra because of the EFI and dyno time needed.

Also, putting on an extended and raked front end. It is 6 deg.rake, and 4" over. Plus putting 16" apes on it, and bobbing the rear fender, side license plate, new lights, etc.

Guess all the relatives will be getting coal from me for Christmas this year!

 

Friend of mine has an 2006 883...converted to 1200 couple months ago....putts up and down the boulevard, no long trips. Now it's for sale! Less than 4,000 miles. Told him you can't sell it as a 1200 and expect to recoup your wasted money! His comment...."but it's a 1200". Go figure *sigh*
